San Luis, Arizona — On January 17, 2020, a water line break on West Cesar Chavez Blvd (between San Luis Plaza Dr and Hidalgo Ave (in the water line running under the canal bridge) eroded an undetermined area beneath the eastern approach the bridge. Although a preliminary engineering evaluation revealed that the bridge span itself continues to be safe, it continues to be unclear whether the eastern approach can safely accommodate vehicular traffic.
Until a comprehensive engineering evaluation of the eastern approach can be completed (to determine the degree of erosion, impact on vehicular safety, and potential required repairs), while simultaneously assessing the failed water line and repair strategy, the roadway will continue to be closed to through traffic.
The Public Works Department will update the community when additional information is available regarding the severity of damage and the estimated schedule for repairs. Until repairs are complete and road closure and detour signs are removed, we urge all motorists to use marked detour routes.
For more information on this matter please contact the City of San Luis Public Works Department at (928) 341-8577.
