[ARCHIVED] City Hall Lights up Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis has once again illuminated City Hall purple to promote awareness against domestic violence. October is Domestic Awareness Month and San Luis remains committed to raising awareness and has joined efforts with other partners such as, South Yuma County Against Domestic Violence Coalition and Campesinos Sin Fronteras to put an end to domestic violence.

The goal is to educate and provide resources for citizens and victims so that one day all violence will be reduced and eventually eliminated. The campaign encourages public, private and non-profit entities to raise awareness of the issue by embracing the color purple – the symbolic hue for domestic violence awareness – by shining purple lights on City buildings, wearing purple and sponsoring awareness events. Each year, hundreds of organizations and individuals across the state participate in the Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign.

“We are proud to stand with our leaders in local government and partners to declare our commitment to the fight against domestic violence, in this community and throughout the State of Arizona. Together we stand strong to help those in need, no matter where they are in the process, and we will not rest until every person can feel safe in their own home,” said Council Member Maria Ramos. “This will be the fifth year that we have participated in the Walk Against Domestic Violence, but it will not be our last. We would like to encourage everyone to take a moment and think about what you can do to help put an end to domestic violence in this community and throughout Yuma County” she added.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite the community to join us for the Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence on Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 at 8:00 AM. The starting point is at the intersection of Urtuzuastegui St. and Main St. and will finish at the Fernando Padilla Community Center.

We should also take the time to honor our Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Advocates and any Victim Service Providers who offer support during these hard moments of someone's life.

Thank you for your support and remember “together we stand” against DOMESTIC ABUSE.
