San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis welcomed representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the General Service Administration (GSA), Community Design and Architecture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security to participate in a three-day charrette to re-design the San Luis I Port of Entry (POE) downtown area, a project also referred to as, Improving Community Connections.
The sessions and public meetings held over three days gave the residents of San Luis, stakeholders, and local, state, and federal government officials the opportunity to provide their recommendations based on their area of expertise. The City of San Luis prioritized the following three main topics of discussion: traffic (improve traffic circulation for bicycles, pedestrians and vehicles), connectivity (port of entry ingress/egress options, parking) and economic development.
The firm Community Design and Architecture recommends providing a public space for residents to gather for activities. Another suggestion is to increase street trees and make wider streets to create a more welcoming and walk-able environment. In addition, the following design concepts were presented to alleviate traffic congestion:
- Use U Street to 10th Avenue to direct through outbound traffic around downtown.
- Formalize locations for shuttle/bus pick and drop off for workers.
- Expand Bicycling and Parking.
Residents are still encouraged to submit any comments and/or questions regarding the San Luis Improving Community Connections design by February 20th, 2018.
