San Luis, Arizona — Business and Government leaders from Arizona and Sonora gathered in Tucson, Arizona from June 14-15, 2018 for the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC) 2018 Annual Summit. Among those in attendance were Mayor Gerardo Sanchez and Vice Mayor Maria Cecilia Ramos of the City of San Luis alongside Mayor Doug Nicholls of the City of Yuma, Mayor Jose Yepez of the City of Somerton, Mayor Cecilia McCullough of the Town of Wellton, and Tony Reyes, Yuma County Board of Supervisor Chairman.
The AMC, in partnership with the Comisión Sonora-Arizona (CSA), hosted thirteen binational committee meetings that focused on this year theme, "Leadership in Action" and included a panel with all Arizona border mayors where they discussed topics from global manufacturing to tourism, safety, and international market trends. The 2018 AMC Summit was hosted by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich in efforts to promote their strategies for cross-border collaboration. As well as to introduce their task forces and goals, including the accelerated business growth that will help elevate both Arizona and Sonora.
Mayor Gerardo Sanchez presented on the San Luis Port of Entry System during the Congressional Border Briefing and the Transportation, Infrastructure and Ports Committee Session. In which he presented to the Arizona Department of Transportation, Customs and Border Protection, and the Office of Governor Ducey an update on the Pedestrian Annexation at Port of Entry I and on the Low Cost-High Impact Port of Entry Projects.
“I am glad to have been a part of this year’s AMC Summit and to bring focus to the San Luis Ports of Entry,” said Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “Not only is Port of Entry II doing Unified Cargo Processing they will also be introducing a Double Trailer Program in which they will be processing trailers with double beds at once. This is something that has not been done at any United States-Mexico Port of Entry.” Vice Mayor Maria Cecilia Ramos added, “while there have been several obstacles, the City of San Luis is being recognized for our hard efforts and our Ports of Entry are now being recognized throughout the region."
