San Luis, Arizona — Last Thursday, elected officials, stakeholders, and community members gathered in Yuma, Arizona for Governor Doug Ducey’s State of the State Address, marking the fifth year Governor Ducey has personally delivered his address to our region.

Among those in attendance were Mayor Gerardo Sanchez, Vice Mayor Maria Cecilia Ramos, and Council Member Matias Rosales. Alongside Mayor Douglas Nicholls of the City of Yuma, Mayor Cecilia McCollough of the Town of Wellton, and Mayor Gerardo Anaya of the City of Somerton.

Before Governor Ducey’s State of the State Address, Governor Ducey signed the State’s Drought Contingency Plan alongside the 4FrontEd Mayors and water leaders. The State’s Drought Contingency Plan will balance the water reductions to help secure the future of Arizona’s water.

The Governor’s State of the State Address touched on several relevant topics for our region; which included the 20% pay increase to all K-12 teachers that passed late last year. Governor Ducey also touched based on the need of a school safety plan for the state that will add additional campus-based officers and counselors, as well as the importance of the Career-Technical Education Courses. He also talked about the state’s population and economic growth.

“It was an honor to be a part of Governor Ducey’s State of the State address and to hear that the Gadsden Elementary School District has gone beyond the 20% pay increases for our teachers,” said Mayor Sanchez. “It is crucial for us to continue to support teachers and provide all students with all the resources needed as the population of San Luis is so young,” he added.
