San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis is proud to announce that the Planning and Zoning Department has been awarded the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Census and Local Democracy Grant.
The NLC awarded the City of San Luis $20,000.00 for census outreach efforts in hard to reach areas and to further expand census education and civic engagement with historically undercounted groups by leveraging the momentum, infrastructure, and network of trusted community partners. This is the second NLC grant the City of San Luis has received for its Census outreach efforts.
“With only thirty (30) days left in the 2020 Census, it is crucial to expand and further engage our community members to ensure every San Luis resident is counted,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “For every person who is not counted in San Luis, we lose approximately $3,500.00. The time to respond is now, together we can shape the future of our community,” he added.
“Congratulations to the City of San Luis Planning and Zoning Department and the San Luis Complete Count Committee on receiving the NLC Census and Local Democracy grant,” stated City Administrator Tadeo A. De La Hoya. “This will help the City’s ongoing efforts in ensuring every resident in San Luis in counted,” he concluded.
The census is held once every decade and is a complete count of every person living in the United States. Census data is used to determine the distribution of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used for economic development, emergency preparedness, and community initiatives involving legislation, quality of life issues, school planning, and consumer advocacy. The Census data is also used for school programs, free lunches, as well as low-income programs such as WIC, Head Start, and free childcare.
Projects such as the planning of the regional park, the expansion of Cesar Chavez Blvd., the planning of the San Luis Fire Department and San Luis Police Department Substations, and Community Development Block Grant funded projects such as Mesa St. Improvements, all depend on a population and housing count and projections provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.
