Congress Approves Additional Funding for San Luis 1 Modernization

The recently approved Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act includes $147 million to pay for the full build-out of the San Luis 1 Modernization Project. The City of San Luis, under the leadership of Mayor Gerardo Sanchez, has been leading a broad coalition of stakeholders that have supported this critical project for several years. The San Luis 1 port of entry continues to be one of the busiest and most congested ports of entry on the US-Mexico border and the last time significant improvements had been made to the ports, computers relied on dial-up connections for the internet.

Combined with the $152.4 million that were designated for the project in FY 2020, that brings the total investment close to $299 million, an investment that will be a huge catalyst for the regional economy in an of itself. It is hoped that the project will break ground in 2022.

With this investment, the US federal government will tear down and rebuild the entire port of entry, resulting in a port of entry that will greatly contribute to the economic development of the entire binational region. In 2020, more than 5.3 million people crossed at San Luis, and with the modification of the cross-border travel restrictions, it is anticipated that San Luis will quickly return to the pre-pandemic volumes exceeding 10 million people.
