[ARCHIVED] 10-Digit Local Dialing Requirement In Arizona To Become Effective

dial-pr-web

San Luis, Arizona – The City of San Luis will be part of the mandatory 10-digit dialing requirement in Arizona which will become effective on October 24th, 2021. Implementation of this order applies to all local calls with area codes 480, 520, and 928.

On July 16th, 2020 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted Order (FCC 20-100) approving dialing 988 as the 3-digit abbreviated dialing code to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, starting July 16th, 2022. Customers must continue to dial 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to reach the lifeline until the date determined above.

The adopted Order requires all telecommunications carriers, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, and one-way VoIP covered providers to make the network changes necessary to ensure that users can dial 988 to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

To complete local calls, the new dialing procedure requires callers to dial the area code plus the telephone number. In addition to changing dialing patterns, automatic dialing equipment that are programmed to complete local calls using only 7-digit numbers will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls to 10-digit numbers.

Customers with questions about the dialing change are encouraged to contact their local service provider, or visit the FCC website https://www.fcc.gov/suicide-prevention-hotline

“It is important for our City of San Luis residents to be informed of the mandatory 10-digit dialing requirement,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “This is also an opportunity to bring awareness to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline,” he commented.
