San Luis, Arizona – City Administrator Tadeo A. de La Hoya, became a member of the newly formed Countywide Broadband Task Force, aimed at bringing considerable broadband improvements to Yuma County.

The task force includes Yuma County, the Cities of Yuma, Somerton and San Luis, Town of Wellton, and economic development and agricultural representatives. The task force is focused on enhancing broadband service in all parts of the County, particularly areas that are currently underserved.

The group is working closely with Jeff Sobotka, Vice President & State Broadband Director with the Arizona Commerce Authority, to identify opportunities and priorities for the countywide broadband effort. The group builds on two years of work by the Broadband Action Team, an informal team of local government representatives and industry leaders dedicated to seeing improved connectivity and Internet speeds throughout the region.

The immediate goal is to engage the services of a consulting firm to develop a comprehensive broadband plan for the County, determining needs and opportunities to enable a strong return on investment. Federal funding is more likely to go to cities, counties and regions that are ready to put it to use.

“It is exciting to be a part of the Countywide Broadband Task Force, an improved broadband will greatly benefit our communities in many ways,” stated City Administrator Tadeo A. De La Hoya.

“The quality of life for our residents in the City of San Luis would be positively impacted with better broadband,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez.  “Our city is growing rapidly, it is important that we work to equip our community with the necessary technological resources,” he added.
