San Luis, Arizona — The San Luis Port of Entry I will receive approximately $147 million in funding for the Modernization Project.
On Friday, November 5, 2021, the United States House of Representatives passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, a $1.2 trillion bipartisan bill which will distribute $550 billion of federal funds for roads, bridges, mass transit, rail, airports, ports and waterways. This bill, which President Biden is expected to sign into law in the coming days, will provide the remaining funding needed for the San Luis Port of Entry I Modernization Project.
Back in December of 2019, $152.4 million in federal funding was approved for phase I of the San Luis Port of Entry I Modernization Project. The passage of the Infrastructure bill will appropriate approximately $147 million needed to pay for the full buildout of the project. This will total to an investment of approximately $298 million. The project is expected to break ground in 2022.
“We have for years been tirelessly working to obtain the funding for this project. It is a great feeling to learn that all our hard work has paid off.” Stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “I want to thank Senator Mark Kelly and Senator Kyrsten Sinema for their unwavering support. My appreciation to our Governor Doug Doucey and the entire Arizona Congressional Delegation who have unanimously backed and advocated for this project. And of course, special recognition to all our regional stakeholders, which are too many to name, our surrounding cities and towns, as well as our mayors, for the support we have received during this process” he added. “This is a tremendous investment to the City of San Luis and the City of San Luis Rio Colorado and a major investment in the future of our cross-border relationship and economies. Now we have to shift focus to working with our federal partners in the design and construction of this project. We will continue working arduously for the future of our community and our residents. Great things are coming to the City of San Luis!” he concluded.
The San Luis port will be renovating its facilities to reduce wait times for pedestrian and cross-border travelers, expanding private vehicle lanes, inspection canopies, storage, and pedestrian and administrative facilities, among other improvements.
