Mayor Gerardo "Jerry" Sanchez was appointed to his position on May 2, 2012, after having served on the City Council since 2008. A resident of San Luis for 16 years, Jerry is a Physician's Assistant (PA). Jerry received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arizona, an Advanced Degree in Medical Technology from the University of Arizona, and a Bachelor's of Medical Science from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona.
Throughout the years, Mayor Sanchez has been active in numerous community organizations. Jerry is a board member of the Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization (YMPO), chairperson for the City of San Luis Employee Benefits Trust Committee, chairperson for the City of San Luis Police and Fire Department Public Safety Retirement Organization, and is an active participant in the US - Mexico Border Mayors Association. Prior to becoming an elected official of the city, Mayor Sanchez served as a member of the San Luis Economic Development Corporation and the San Luis Planning and Zoning Commission.
Jerry is well aware of his responsibilities to the community. It is a role that he takes seriously. He practices restraint when making decisions on how best to use taxpayer dollars, always weighing the benefits to the community and the costs. Whenever possible, Jerry finds alternative sources such as grants from private sources and public or private partnerships to fund initiatives and events.
A firm believer in providing residents greater access to their local government, Jerry invites all residents to City Council meetings and work sessions throughout the year, so they can voice their opinions, learn of upcoming projects, and ask questions.
Mayor Sanchez states, "I have always been impressed with the leadership in San Luis, and it is an honor to serve the citizens. We have many challenges today, but they are no greater than those faced by former mayors. Working together, we can make this an even better place in which to live and work."
Mayor Sanchez, a 1st generation native of Arizona, graduated from Kofa High School in 1988. He lives in San Luis with his 2 children, Karen and Abraham.
