If you have been cited with a civil traffic infraction (complaint), you received a court date and time. Traffic violations are generally divided into two categories, parking violations and moving violations. By your court date, you will need to decide how you want to plea to your violation(s). The following are possible pleas you may enter per violation:

Attend Defensive Driving School (DDS)

Read through the requirements carefully at Defensive Driving Home (azcourts.gov). If eligible, register by phone at 1-888-334-5565 or online at azdrive.com. You must complete the DDS class seven (7) days prior to your scheduled court date.

There is a diversion fee that is paid directly to the school for attending a defensive driving class. Depending on the school you select, you may attend an in person or online class. Once you complete the class, the school will report your completion automatically. It is your responsibility to make sure that you follow-up with the Court to ensure that your completion was received at least five (5) days after completion.  Contact the school directly to see if they offer classes in other languages.

If you were cited for more than one moving violation on your traffic ticket it is your responsibility to resolve the other violations with the Court by the date and time listed on your ticket. If you are unable to complete the class seven (7) days prior to your scheduled court date, contact the court at SLMCciv@courts.az.gov to see if you are eligible for an extension.

For a list of certified defensive driving schools and a list of eligible moving violations, visit the following website List of Eligible Violations or you can call 1-888-334-5565.

Pay the Fine

You may pay at the Court front counter during regular business hours with cash or money orders. You may pay with a credit/debit card by phone or online. Please refer to the Payments tab for further instructions.

If you are required to pay fines, penalties, fees or other financial obligations as a result of a judgement of this court and you are unable to pay, bring this information to the attention of the court staff or the judge because payments over time or other alternatives may be available.  Do not ignore your responsibility to pay, as this may result in additional penalties and costs to you.  For more information, contact the court or an attorney.

Request Hearing

You may request a Hearing on Traffic Charges. The hearing date will be set approximately 20 days from the date of request. You may bring witnesses and present your case before a judge. On the charges for which a hearing is requested, you give up the option of attending a defensive driving class.

Please note: From the date you receive your violation, it can take up to 10 working days for the citation to be filed with the court by the law enforcement agency and entered into our court case management system.
